Virtual Cell

This web site contains a set of images that let you "dissect" a plant cell. The images include 3-d computer drawings of a cell and electron micrographs associated with some of the computer generated drawings. Below each picture are a few sentences describing what you are looking at. When looking at a computer generated images, you can 'cut' into it to see what's inside, 'zoom' in to see a structure in more detail, and for some of the views rotate the image around. The images go many levels deep into the cell, from whole cell to the proteins in the chloroplast membranes. The images are similar to those that you would find in a typical introductory biology textbook

Although the text is a bit simplistic and the interface is slightly akward because it has to work over the world-wide-web, this is a nice site and worth a look. There are a lot of images available and is easy to navigate around (in Netscape - it had problems with Internet Explorer). Its probably a good place to point an undergraduate who wants a something to supplement their intro bio textbook chapter on cells and cellular organelles.
